broodforce Ltd.: a fictive company for a fictive setting

broodforce Ltd. Logo

A product strategy gets generally derived from the product company’s strategy. So before we can start to define our strategy for CoffeeBoy, we should first meet the company in which it will be build: broodforce Ltd. With this post we will open up a fictive, narrative setting in which we will design and develop CoffeeBoy in the role of broodforce Ltd.’s CIO Pete.

CoffeeBoy Series Schedule

Profile

broodforce Ltd. is a young IT company based at the Lake of Constance, Germany. Founded in September 2015 by Pete B. (CIO1) and Paul C. (CEO2) it successfully creates innovative, user-centered products within the Internet of Things (IoT) sector.

Strategy

broodforce operates within a small niche of the IoT sector. Their circle of customers consists of relatively wealthy people willing to pay hight prices for high quality, fancy products. broodforce sells their products in limited editions, well knowing that this is a critical argument for theirs customers to buy the products.

broodforce does without any marketing efforts. With the “limited edition”-strategy they create a very high demand and hence have no problems to sell their products.

Products

Since their foundation in the year 2013 broodforce published three very successful products.

LawnBoy

LawnBoy

  • An autonomic, battery-driven lawn mover.
  • Manual control possible.
  • Scheduled or intelligent operation.
LightingBoy

LightingBoy

  • An in- and outdoor lighting control system.
  • Manual control possible.
  • Scheduled or intelligent operation.
PoolBoy

PoolBoy

  • A water temperature and quality control system.
  • Sophisticated alarming features.

The convention to represent each product with a distinctive character and to suffix each name with Boy results from the concept to grant each product a personal face. Thereby Boy should strengthen both, the personality effect as well as the product’s recognition value. Pete came up with the idea to choose the term Boy when he thought about a product from his childhood with the most significance: the GameBoy.

Staff

broodforce’s staff consists of two hardware and three software engineers, whereby Pete heads the software and Paul leads the hardware guys. Both, Pete and Paul support their teams by contributing software code respectively building hardware components as developers. The final production of hardware components gets outsourced. Pete’s wife Francine B. is responsible for all kinds of administrative tasks at broodforce.

Up next

With this post we’ve finished the introduction phase of the CoffeeBoy series. Now that we’re armed with the knowledge which is necessary to understand how we’ll proceed to design CoffeeBoy, we’ll begin our UX design process on the strategy plane in the next post. Stay tuned!
